Ziggy Stardust – Ziggy Stardust

It was 1997, Christopher had graduated from highschool and was heading to college in the fall. I had decided that he didn’t need his bedroom anymore. I mean, well, he didn’t!!! After my parents got over the shock of me wanting to move into the basement in spite of my lifelong fear of the dark, they told me I could re-paint the room to make it mine-own. Aside: Mom totally vetoed my black walls idea which at the time I thought was utter bullshit until like 6 months later after watching a scary movie my mother came down to find me wrapped in the multiple rosaries which I was sure were going to protect me from the psychotic murderer now after me. This comes 14 years late but…you were right, Mom. Good lookin’ out! So Dad and I went to the hardware store and picked out some colors: Bumble Bee (dad later renamed “Helen Keller Yeller” which is probably not right but still funny), Kermit Green, and Bahama Blue. I agree, this is a lot of color for one as angsty as I. Dad did the painting and one day I walked downstairs to pretend to help while hanging out and listening to music.

He was listening to The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.

Who’s this guy, Dad?

This is David Bowie.

You know that guy in the Labyrinth that you’ve been watching a lot lately? Him.

Really? Man, I love that guy. This is really cool.

For the next few hours, while dad painted, I hung out and listened to the rest of the album and dad told me all about the persona Ziggy Stardust and his world that David Bowie had created. I was in love. This was a time when most of my friends were listening to Nirvana, GreenDay, Offspring, and PearlJam but not me. Honestly, I don’t get they hype. Instead I lament being born too late to experience glam rock, Freddie Mercury, and Ziggy Stardust – – LIVE!

It is this album through which, I believe, the cosmos lets me know I’m a-o-k. Whenever I hear Five Years, Moonage Daydream, Suffragette City, Ziggy Stardust, or Rock n’ Roll Suicide on the radio…I know it’s gonna be a good day or whatever’s bringing me down ain’t no big thang and order will come from this chaos.

Tonight – this played on my way home from Warminster.

Ziggy played guitar, jammin’ good with Weird and Gilly,
The spiders from Mars, he played it left hand
But made it too far
Became the special man, then we were Ziggy’s band

Ziggy really sang, screwed up eyes and screwed down hairdo
Like some cat from Japan, he could lick ’em by smiling
He could leave ’em to hang
Came on so loaded man, well hung and snow white tan

So where were the spiders while the fly tried th break our balls
Just a beer light to guide us
So we bitched about his fans and should we crush his sweet hands?

Ziggy played for time, jiving us that we was voodoo
The kids was just crass. He was the nazz
With God given ass
He took it all too far, but boy could he play guitar

Making love with his ego, Ziggy sucked up into his mind
Like a leper messiah
When the kids had killed the man I had to break up the band

Ziggy Played Guitar
